Health Sci LABS

Learn. Aspire. Begin. Succeed.

Health Sci LABS - Molecular Biology LabExercise Lab

The Health Sci LABS program aims to ignite a passion for biology and health-related sciences among middle school and high school students in the Memphis metropolitan area through engaging hands-on activities and immersive learning experiences. We collaborate with laboratories within the College of Health Sciences, Department of Biological Sciences, Center for Biodiversity Research, and the Edward J. Meeman Biological Field Station at the University of Memphis.

Health Sci LABS - Classroom

Guided by skilled educators and researchers, the program encourages students to explore the wonders of the biological system through discussion panels with researchers, interactive laboratory experiments, field work in local ecosystems, and mentorship from scientists and educators. By fostering curiosity and critical thinking, students are inspired to pursue careers in STEM fields, paving the way for the next generation of biological and human health researchers and professionals.

The Health Sci LABS program typically hosts 15-20 students each semester where students are working on a variety aspects of research related to biology and/or human health. These students will be actively participating in different fields of biology, from conducting experiments in the labs on campus to field works in Edward J. Meeman Biological Field Station, where they will be assisting in active research projects. At the end of the program, students are required to complete an evaluation form and write a report on their research progress and findings. This will help us gage the effectiveness of the program and we will adjust accordingly to better serve students.

At the end of each semester, outstanding students who are interested in pursuing further research experiences are encouraged to apply for the Health Sci LABS summer scholarship sponsored by the College of Health Sciences. Scholarships will be based on merit and need, favoring students from lower income brackets and under-represented groups.
