Sandrell Hill: Advancing in Clinical Nutrition at UofM
Memphis native Sandrell Hill’s decision to join the University of Memphis College
of Health Sciences as a graduate student, pursuing a Master’s in Clinical Nutrition, was largely influenced by the outstanding instructors in the Health Sciences and Dietetics program. Their guidance and the supportive environment at UofM were key factors in her choice
to continue her education here. She is eager to advance her knowledge in clinical
nutrition through this 16-month program. After earning her Bachelor's in Health Studies with a concentration in Dietetics from the UofM this past May, she is passionate
about nutrition and its impact on health and looking forward to taking her passion
to the next level.
Preparation and Mentorship
Sandrell’s undergraduate experience at UofM provided a solid foundation for her graduate studies. Her coursework introduced her to clinical nutrition and prepared her for the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential exam. She credits Dr. Tracy Bruen, who offered unwavering support and mentorship throughout her undergraduate years, as a significant influence in her decision to pursue a graduate degree. As she advances in her studies, Sandrell is eager to improve her writing skills and professional development. She is particularly excited about the opportunity to present her thesis, which she views as a chance to grow both academically and professionally. Sandrell also looks forward to gaining more real-world experience in dietetics through internships at hospitals and clinics, where she will work under the supervision of registered dietitians.
Blogging & Vlogging Food as Medicine
Sandrell’s passion for nutrition stems from her personal wellness journey, which inspired her to start blogging and vlogging about using food as medicine. Her ultimate goal is to work in clinical nutrition and eventually transition to private practice as a women’s wellness coach, specializing in reproductive and skin health. Volunteering has been a significant part of her growth, and she plans to continue giving back to the community as she progresses in her career.
A Dual Role in Healthcare
Currently, Sandrell works as a nutrition operator at Methodist Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, where she plays a crucial role in ensuring that patients receive meals tailored to their specific dietary needs. She accommodates various food allergies, sensitivities, and cultural preferences, all while adhering to strict dietary guidelines. Additionally, she works part-time as a caregiver with Shelby Residential Vocational Services (SRVS), supporting individuals with disabilities in developing meaningful relationships and community integration.
Sandrell Hill’s dedication to her education and passion for helping others make her a remarkable addition to the UofM Graduate School. We’re excited to see where her journey in Clinical Nutrition takes her!
