Haley Siegfried: A Passionate Scholar on a Path to Cognitive Psychology Excellence
We’re thrilled to spotlight Memphis native, Haley Siegfried! She is currently serving as a Doctoral Research Assistant and starting this fall, she begins pursuing her PhD in Experimental Psychology, focusing on the Cognitive Psychology area, at the University of Memphis.
Academic Journey and Motivation
Haley's academic journey began with a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Memphis. During her undergraduate years, she developed a strong interest in cognitive psychology, which led her to continue her studies in the same field. Haley chose the PhD program in Experimental Psychology at the University of Memphis because of its focus on cognitive processes, psycholinguistics, and the role of technology in learning. She was also attracted to the program’s emphasis on experiential learning through research assistantships, teaching, and graduate coursework.
Undergraduate Experience at UofM
Haley's involvement in the Helen Hardin Honors College and her research work during her undergraduate studies prepared her well for graduate school. Her research experience in the KuhlMedia and Mind Lab under Dr. Shelbi Kuhlmann provided deep insights into the cognitive science of learning and allowed her to conduct her own study on undergraduate STEM majors' motivation. She presented her research at the Mid-South Psychology Conference and looks forward to expanding her work in graduate school.
Continuing Education at UofM
Haley's motivation to pursue a PhD at the University of Memphis was fueled by her positive undergraduate research experiences. She presented her work at local and national conferences, including an upcoming presentation at the American Psychological Association annual meeting in Seattle. These experiences, combined with the supportive academic community at UofM, solidified her decision to continue her education there.
Influential Mentors and Support System
Haley credits her family and professors, particularly Dr. Shelbi Kuhlmann, for their unwavering support and guidance throughout her academic journey. As a first-generation college student, Haley's accomplishments are a testament to her dedication and the encouragement she received both on and off campus.
Skills and Knowledge Development
Haley is eager to delve deeper into research methodology in cognitive psychology. She is excited to learn how to conceptualize studies, measure variables, and use the necessary technologies for research. Her interests include understanding how students self-regulate their learning in challenging STEM courses and enhancing her writing skills for conference submissions, research grants, and journal articles.
Looking Forward to Graduate Opportunities
Haley is most excited about collaborating with fellow graduate students and faculty at UofM. She cherishes the supportive and kind community she found during her undergraduate studies and looks forward to building similar connections in her graduate program.
Goals and Career Aspirations
Haley aims to define priorities, advance her skills and knowledge, create realistic timelines, and build collaborations during her PhD program. She aspires to pursue a career in academia or industry, focusing on research in corporate learning and success, leveraging her expertise in cognitive sciences to shape effective learning environments.
