Spotlight on Andrew Hashimura: A Passion for Student Success

Originally from Beckley, West Virginia, Andrew’s dedication to higher education and student development has led him to the UofM, where he hopes to further refine his skills and continue his impactful work in enrollment management.

A Passion for Education and Student Development

Andrew’s academic journey is already marked by notable achievements, including a Master’s in Higher Education Administration. His career has been driven by a passion for student development and enrollment management, which inspired him to seek additional expertise in college and career counseling. He views this program as a natural extension of his professional field, helping him better support students as they navigate their academic journeys.

Andrew chose the UofM for its strong academic reputation and focus on student success. Specifically, he was drawn to the program director, Dr. Michelle Brasfield, a respected professor at UofM and a leader in the field, and the recommendations of colleagues who had previously completed the program. “The alignment of the program with my career goals made this decision an easy one,” he shares.

Goals for Growth

As Andrew begins his studies, he’s most excited to deepen his understanding of college and career counseling while gaining skills to better serve students. His long-term aspirations include becoming a higher education leader specializing in student success. He also plans to pursue a doctoral degree in the future to continue advancing his knowledge and career.

Andrew brings extensive experience to the table, having worked in college admissions and enrollment management. From recruiting prospective students to guiding them through the enrollment process, his expertise in student engagement positions him as an asset to the program. His decision to pursue the certificate reflects his commitment to honing these skills and expanding his impact in the field.

Outside of his professional and academic endeavors, Andrew is a proud “girl-dad” to two daughters, ages 4 and 1. Balancing family life and graduate school is no small feat, but Andrew approaches it with a focus on time management, structured scheduling, and leveraging his support systems. His dedication to both his family and his studies reflects his ability to prioritize and stay focused on his goals.

Advice and Outlook

When asked about advice for others considering graduate school, Andrew offers, “You will get out of this program what you put into it.” He also looks forward to collaborating with faculty and peers, engaging in thoughtful discussions, and gaining practical experience through student support opportunities at the UofM.

With his dedication to student success and his drive to continually grow as a professional, Andrew Hashimura is poised to make a significant impact at the University of Memphis and beyond. We’re excited to see all he will accomplish during his time in the program and in his future endeavors!
