Resources Career Services Provides for Graduate Students (by: Erica Shaw)
Career Services provides a myriad of resources for all students, but as a Graduate student you will be stepping into the world as a new professional and that requires preparation. Every college in the university has its own dedicated Career Specialist who is available for one-on-one meetings in person or virtually to assist you. Here is how Career Services can assist you in preparing for your new journey.
Professional Documents
Need to perfect your resume? Never written a cover letter? Does your industry require a curriculum vitae (CV) instead of a resume? Did you not know that a CV and a resume are two different documents? Its ok, because Career Services can assist you.
You can upload your professional documents to your Handshake account under the Documents section and your Career Specialist can review them giving you line by line comments and suggestions to assist you in creating professional documents that will give you the best chance at being called for an interview. You can also schedule a meeting in person or virtually to review your documents.
Use the professional document resources the university offers for free to write your resume, cover letter, and curriculum vitae. The resource offers step by step guides that fully explain the writing process as well as examples to follow.
Interviewing Techniques
Do you have an interview coming up for that dream job? Or maybe it is a part time job that will give you the skills you need to get that dream job? Either way, Career Services can assist.
Schedule a mock interview session with your Career Specialist where you can practice and discuss how to respond to various questions that are often asked in professional interviews and prepare questions to ask your interviewer. Learn how to research the company and use that information in your interview. Understand how and when to follow up with your interviewer.
Give yourself the best opportunity to land the job with the proper preparation.
Career Exploration/Planning
Are you in a great major, but just not sure of how to function in it? Career Services can assist you by offering a sounding board to talk through your plan and resources to assist you in making informed decisions.
