Finance Teams & Professional Development Programs
CFA Institute Research Challenge
Finance students from the University of Memphis have competed in the CFA Institute Research Challenge for the past several years. For the Research Challenge, a team of three to five students researches a public company, prepares an equity research report similar to a securities analyst’s report to initiate coverage of a company, and then presents their findings to a panel of industry professionals, most of which are Chartered Financial Analysts. This competition provides students with access to multiple networking and mentorship opportunities.
The University of Memphis team won the Mid-South division of the competition in 2011, and placed within the top four in 2012 and 2013.
TVA Student Managed Portfolio
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has partnered with the University of Memphis to provide a real-world learning experience in portfolio management for the UofM students enrolled in either FIR 4331 or FIR 6331. Students actively manage TVA funds by designing investment strategies, calling in trades, and providing performance reports to the TVA. The student-run stock portfolio is under the guidance of a Fogelman faculty member.
Students learn how to manage real money and develop real skills useful for making stock investment decisions, either for their own investment portfolio or for potential career opportunities in the mutual or hedge fund industries. Student managers of the TVA student managed fund are held to similar guidelines as TVA’s professional money managers. This class is unlike any other class offered at the University of Memphis.
Enrolling in FIR 4331 or FIR 6331 places students on the board of directors of the
University of Memphis' TVA student managed mutual fund.
