The Department of Economics announces partnership with NABE
For release: March 26, 2018
The Department of Economics is proud to announce a partnership with the National Association
for Business Economics (NABE). This partnership will offer students the opportunity
to simultaneously earn a Master of Arts (MA) in Economics degree and the Certified
Business Economist (CBE) professional certification.
The Fogelman College's MA in Economics program coursework will prepare students to take the CBE exam. The University of Memphis is the sixth university to become a NABE CBE partner. Other partners include Boston College, Brandeis University, the University of Cincinnati, George Washington University, and John Carroll University.
"We are very proud to have the University of Memphis as the newest addition to our graduate program partners," said Kevin Swift, NABE's CBE vice president, managing director, and chief economist at the American Chemistry Council. "Students who earn their CBE certification alongside their economics degree will enter the job market with a distinct advantage because they will have mastered a body of applied economics knowledge sought after by employers, which is essential for a successful career in the field of economics and data analytics."
"We are excited to begin our partnership with NABE's Certified Business Economist program. Our MA in Economics has long offered excellent training in applied, empirical economics; but, most of our students have chosen the academic path and have gone on to pursue doctoral programs," said Dr. Bill Smith, chair of the Department of Economics. "The affiliation with NABE opens a new track for our students, one oriented towards successful careers as business economists. The CBE's rigorous standards and focus on immediately applicable skills should help better prepare students for the private sector."
