BIT Student Earned Honorable Mention at the Teradata Challenge
For release: July 8, 2016
Department of BIT student and AMIS member, Deidre Chewning, entered the 2016 Teradata
University Network Data Challenge and was one of eight people selected to receive
the Honorable Mention award. This award also included a scholarship to attend the
conference in Atlanta. Deidre joins other award winners from universities such as
Mississippi State, North Carolina State, Purdue, University of South Carolina, and
Carnegie Mellon.
Deidre became aware of the Teradata University Network Data Challenge through her Business Intelligence course taught by Dr. Chen Zhang. Dr. Zhang encouraged students to participate in the challenge as a course assignment. Deidre was provided data from Hire Heroes, which is an organization that helps military veterans gain employment once they leave the Armed Services. Using their data, Deidre was able to provide a set of recommendations to help the nonprofit improve their programs in a way that will increase positive outcomes. Deidre will be attending the conference with additional funding support from the BIT Neumann Travelers Program, which covers up to $1,000 for students sharing their work at conferences and other events.
"I'm very proud of Deidre's accomplishment in Teradata University Network's second annual data challenge competition," said Dr. Chen Zhang, associate professor of Business Information and Technology. "I believe her success will help to inspire other students interested in business intelligence and analytics."
