Tombs of Ancient Egypt

This website contains images and detailed information on more than 100 ancient Egyptian tombs and temples. There are also a small number of 3D digital renderings of select tombs and other resources. Most entries are in English. This very useful website is maintained by Thierry Benderitter. 

 

ARCE Virtual Tours

This website contains photographs and/or 3D digital renderings of 10 sites and 13 artifacts from conservation and site management projects conducted under the auspices of the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE). Materials from the pharaohic through Islamic periods are showcased.

Tomb of Queen Meresankh III

Meresankh III was the wife of king Khafre, the builder of the second pyramid at Giza. They lived during the Old Kingdom period, about 2500 BCE. Her tomb is at Giza.

Tomb of Wahty

Wahty (also spelled Wahtye) was an important official during Old Kingdom period, about 2400 BCE. His tomb, which is located at Saqqara, was discovered by a team of Egyptian archaeologists led by Mohammad Mohammad Yousef in 2018.

Tomb of NiankhKhnum and Khnumhotep

NiankhKhnum and Khnumhotep were both officials and are thought to have been brothers who lived in the later Old Kingdom period, about 2400 BCE. Their tomb is located at Saqqara.

Tomb of Mehu

Mehu was a very important official in the later Old Kingdom period, about 2325 BCE. He served as Vizier, the highest position in the administration, and held other important titles throughout his life. His tomb is at Saqqara.

Tomb of Meru

Meru was an important official of the early Middle Kingdom period, about 2000 BCE. His tomb is at Thebes (modern Luxor) on the west bank of the Nile River in the area known as Asasif.

Temple of Amada

The temple of Amada is far south in Egypt, in the area known as ancient Nubia, not far from the border with Sudan. It was built in the early New Kingdom period, about 1450 BCE, and dedicated to the Egyptian gods Amun and Ra-Horakhty.

Tomb of Menna

Menna (also spelled Mena) was an important official during the early New Kingdom period, about 1400 BCE. His tomb is at Thebes (modern Luxor) on the west bank of the Nile River in the area known as Sheikh Abd el-Qurna.

Great Hypostyle Hall of the Temple of Amun at Karnak

The temple of the god Amun at Karnak is one of the largest religious buildings in the world. It is located in Luxor, on the east side of the Nile River. The archaeological remains span over 2000 years, but the Great Hypostyle Hall is a construction of the New Kingdom period. 
This web site has information and images about the Hypostyle Hall and the University of Memphis project to record and digitize the ancient reliefs.

 

Tomb of Queen Nefertari

Nefertari was the wife of the famous pharaoh Ramses II. They lived during the later New Kingdom period, about 1250 BCE. Her tomb is at Thebes (modern Luxor) on the west bank of the Nile River in the Valley of the Queens.

Two Chapels (no. 6 & 12) from the Temple of Khonsu at Karnak

The temple of Khonsu is located within the larger area of Karnak Temple in Luxor, on the east side of the Nile River. It was begun by pharaoh Ramses III about 1175 BCE. The American Research Center in Egypt lead a project to restore the temple.

Burial Chamber of Ramses VI in the Valley of the Kings

Originally built for pharaoh Ramses V, the tomb was taken over by his successor Ramses VI. This tomb is at Thebes (modern Luxor) on the west bank of the Nile River in the Valley of the Kings and was constructed about 1150 BCE.

Villa of the Birds

The "Villa of the Birds" is named after the wonderful floor mosaics found within the remains of the structure. Built in Alexandria along the Mediterranean coast during the 2nd century, they reflect the Mediterranean focus of the Hellenistic inhabitants of the city. The American Research Center in Egypt lead a project to preserve the house and floors.

The Bab Zuwayla

The Bab Zuwayla (also spelled Bab Zuweila) is one of the giant gates that was built in the city wall of Old Cairo. It was built about 1100 CE. The American Research Center in Egypt lead a project to restore the gate.

Chapel of St. Anthony

The Coptic monastery of St. Anthony's on the Red Sea was founded in the 6th century. This series of 13th-century paintings from the chapel of the monastery has been restored by a multinational project led by the American Research Center in Egypt.

The Karaite Jewish Cemetery in Basatin

The Jewish cemetery at Basatin is one of the oldest in the world, established in what is today modern Cairo in 1482 CE. The American Research Center in Egypt has begun a multi-year project to restore the cemetery and establish a memory garden.
