Sexual Assault/Rape

Sexual assault and rape is on the rise on college campuses. Studies show that at least 1 in 4 college women will be the victim of a sexual assault during her academic career. At least 80% of all sexual assaults are committed by an acquaintance of the victim. The Counseling Center provides support to students who experience this type of violence. A sexually traumatized student may feel/experience:

  • Range of emotions including fear, anger, rage, anxiety, sadness, shock, disbelief, confusion, humiliation, mistrust, and sometimes dissassociation or the appearance of no emotion (being detached).

  • Physical sensations including feeling cold, faint, nauseous.

  • Range of behaviors including crying, yelling, smiling, or possibly calmness.

  • Pain or irritation where the attacker touched or hurt them and/or general soreness and tension.
