Clery Act Compliance

In 1990, the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act was created to honor the memory of Jeanne Clery who lost her life due to the crime of another student. Jeanne’s parents believed if she had known about crime around her campus, she could have made more informed decisions for her safety which could have spared her life.

In 1998, the law was later renamed the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (20 USC § 1092(f)), also referred to as the Clery Act, to honor Jeanne’s memory. The overall mission of the act is to: Provide timely information to the community about crime occurring in the area so they may make informed decisions regarding their safety and safety of others.

As such, the Clery Act is a consumer protection law geared toward providing transparency about campus crime statistics and campus safety policies.  Among other things, the Clery Act requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal student aid programs to disclose information each year to the United States Department of Education related to the occurrence of crime on campus.  Additionally, specific campus policies, as well as criminal and fire incident statistics are published in the form of an Annual Security and Fire Safety Report for those situations that occur on or within specific campus geography.

The University of Memphis is dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure environment for learning and work while endeavoring to ensure students, faculty, and staff are aware of crime on campus.  This site serves to provide information, additional services, and resources to help the campus and greater community to better understand the Clery Act.
