About Dr. Lightsey
Owen Richard Lightsey Jr., Ph.D., University of Maryland (1992), is a Professor of Counseling Psychology at the University of Memphis. His areas of expertise include stress-coping, psychological resilience, and psychological well-being. He has published 34 articles, many in top journals, and has been cited in the scientific literature over 1100 times. He has received or been nominated for several honors including the Diamond Special Recognition Award for Teaching and Research from the Mental Health Association of the Mid-South, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. Dr. Lightsey has served on the editorial boards of The Journal of Counseling Psychology, The Counseling Psychologist, and The Journal for Specialists in Group Work and reviews manuscripts for journals such as the Journal of Happiness Studies, the Journal of Positive Psychology, Cognitive Therapy and Research, Journal of Personality, and Personality and Individual Differences. He particularly enjoys publishing collaboratively with students and former students, three of whom have received research awards for projects conducted with Dr. Lightsey. Dr. Lightsey also enjoys conduct and supervision of group therapy, as well as teaching group psychotherapy courses; he also has extensive experience teaching doctoral research and supervision courses. Examples of Dr. Lightsey's many service activities include serving as Chair of a national diversity-related Special Task Group for Division 17 of the American Psychological Association, serving as Chair of the Counseling, Educational Psychology and Research Department (CEPR) Diversity Committee, serving for over 11 years as Chair of the CEPR Tenure and Promotion Committee, and serving as Chair for six years of the College of Education (formerly the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences) Tenure and Promotion Committee.
