Research

Dr. Tom Hrach published The Riot Report and the News: How the Kerner Commission Changed Media Coverage of Black America, Boston University Press.

Professor Otis Sanford published From Boss Crump to King Willie: How Race Changed Memphis Politics, University of Tennessee Press, 2017.

Journalism Professors Roxane Coche and Joe Hayden in collaboration with history Professor Aram Goudsouzian, Department of History, received a $20,000 Discovery and Development grant from the University of Memphis to conduct "Once More at the River: From MLK to BLM," a multimedia project, including an interactive web site and a long-form documentary, with students conducting oral history interviews. The students involved will take Dr. Hayden's oral history course, "Reporting Social Justice," in Spring 2018 and Dr. Goudsouzian's history course "Memphis and the Movement" in the Fall 2017.

Awards

Tori Cliff, instructor in Journalism at the University of Memphis-Lambuth campus, and Pam Denney, an instructor at the UofM main campus, received the D. Mike Pennington Award for Outstanding Mentoring at the Journalism Alumni Club awards banquet. Dr. Sandy Utt received the Herbert Lee Williams Award.

Assistant Chair Sandra H. Utt received the Dorothy Bowles Public Service Award, top public service award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. The award is presented to a member of the organization who has worked for more than a decade to bridge the gap between educators and professionals. 

The American Journalism Historians Association selected Associate Professor Thom Hrach winner of the 2017 Book of the Year Award for his 2016 publication, "The Riot Report and the News: How the Kerner Commission Changed Media Coverage for Black America."
