Awards

Associate Professor Dr. Joy Goldsmith and her team of colleagues (Wittenberg, E., Ferrell, B., Ragan, S., & Buller, H.) wrote an article, "Comfort Communication for Oncology Nurses: Program Overview and Preliminary Evaluation of a Nationwide Train-the-Trainer Course," that will be published in Patient Education and Counseling, an interdisciplinary, international journal for patient education and health promotion researchers, managers and clinicians.

Associate Professor Joy Goldsmith won the International Communication Association's Outstanding Applied or Public Research Award for a sustained program of research that shaped the scholarly field of media and digital literacy and influenced public policy at the highest levels.

Michael Steudeman, visiting assistant professor in Rhetoric, has been awarded the Gerald R. Miller Outstanding Dissertation Award by the National Communication Association.

Workforce Development

Film and video alumni work on film production crews and in television stations in Memphis and the Mid-South. Communication Studies alumni work in a variety of professional positions in corporations and non-profits in Memphis and the Mid-South, include St. Jude/ALSAC, FedEx, YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South, among many others.

Research

Assistant Professor Christi Moss co-edited a special issue of Howard Journal of Communications on public civil rights commemoration entitled "We March Lest We Forget."

Associate professors Joy Goldsmith and Amanda Young received funding from the University for a Team Innovation Grant, which includes colleagues in the School of Public Health and Department of English. Joy Goldsmith is the principal investigator.

Associate professors Joy Goldsmith and Amanda Young founded the Center for Health Literacy and Health Communication, which includes faculty from several disciplines and universities.

Upcoming events as part of the city's MLK50 commemorations in spring 2018 include a departmental symposium, and a screening of "At the River I Stand," directed by Professors David Appleby, Allison Graham and Steve Ross.
