The drop period occurs during the first two weeks of the semester. Students can drop classes using the Registration tool in MyMemphis. Dropping a course does not show up on the transcript.
Regular Withdrawal starts when the drop period ends. The student can withdraw through MyMemphis, and a grade of W will appear on the transcript. Financial charges may apply, so encourage the student to speak with Financial Aid before withdrawing from the class. During the Late Withdrawal period, the student cannot drop the course through MyMemphis but must request approval by submitting a Late Withdrawal petition and supporting documentation. To be approved, the student must prove the situation was severe, unforeseen and beyond the student's control.
The student must be within two (2) semesters of graduation; however, a student can have less than 90 hours and therefore not have senior status. Exact hours and GPA may vary and be at the department's discretion.
Participation in the commencement ceremony is not graduation. Graduation or certification is a three-week process that happens after the commencement ceremony. It involves checking official grades to ensure all degree requirements have been satisfied. Once the degree has been certified, the conferral date will be posted on the transcript.
- Contact the instructor and ask for permission to be added. The instructor is free to decline the request, but if they agree, a statement of approval must be provided in either an email or an attached letter.
- Enter a Tiger Help ticket at Schedule Adjustment/Late Adds—UofM Service Desk (topdesk.net). Be sure to upload the instructor's approval message in the ticket; otherwise, the request will be rejected. An image of an email is acceptable.

No. Students cannot use CLEP to fulfill ENGL 1010/1020 if they have already earned any grade, including F.
University residence requirements are detailed under the Graduation from the University section. A transfer student in The College of Arts and Sciences must earn at least six semester hours in residence in the major subject and at least three semester hours in the minor. These credits may be earned only through regular class enrollment for a letter grade.
In accordance with accreditation requirements through SACSCOC, any experiential learning credit or alternative credit earned by a student from the following sources will not count towards the University of Memphis residency requirements:
- ACT/SAT Prof Credit
- Advanced Placement
- College Level Exam Program
- Credit by Examination
- Credit by Proficiency
- Language Proficiency
- Dante Subject Exam
- International Baccalaureate
- Language Placement
- Credit by Validation
- Military Service Credit
- Dual Credit Assessment-Inst-U of M
- Dual Credit Assessment-State-UofM
- ACT Prof Exam Program
- Experiential Learning (such as pre-assessed)
- Saylor courses and other credit-generating online sources that are awarded as transfer credit
Effective Spring 2023, UG and GR students have one major term to complete their incomplete assignments when given an "I" grade; otherwise, the grade changes to an "F." This policy does not apply to graduating seniors. Students graduating during the term in which the "I" grade is issued must adhere to graduation deadlines. Students will have three weeks after the commencement ceremony to have the final grade posted to the transcript.
The requirement that students earn grades of at least C minus in ENGL 1010 and 1020 extends to students with AA/AS degrees. Students cannot earn a degree from UofM unless these grades are obtained.
Use the request for a Letter of Recommendation form on the Registrar's website.
Before speaking with a parent, guardian or anyone other than the student, the student must give permission by submitting a Consent to Release Education Record Information. ALWAYS have the student fill out a new form. Most students say they have filled out a previous form, but it is not on file. Check SPACMNT in Banner to see if a form has previously been submitted.
There are three ways to find a class roster:
Transfer students who earn an AA or AS degree have a notation on their degree indicating that their General Education requirements are complete and their degree lacks a Gen Ed section.
The catalog states, “Upon completion of an associate’s degree designed for transfer at a regionally accredited college or university (A.A. or A.S.), the requirements of the lower-division general education core will be complete and accepted by the University of Memphis in the transfer process.” However, the catalog says, “Institutional/departmental requirements of the grade of “C” will be honored. Even if credit is granted for a course, any specific requirements for the grade of “C” by the receiving institution will be enforced.” (In this statement, “C” means any iteration of a “C,” which includes C+, C, and C-).
Therefore, the requirement that students earn grades of at least C minus in ENGL 1010 and 1020 extends to students with AA/AS degrees. Students cannot earn a degree from UofM unless these grades are obtained.
In the past, UMdegree did not have a way to “catch” AA/AS students with grades lower than C- in ENGL 1010/1020. Going forward, students who earned an associate’s degree but have a grade lower than C- in either ENGL 1010 or 1020 will not have AA/AS attribute, thereby making the full Gen Ed section visible. This way it will be obvious to you that the student needs to repeat ENGL 1010/1020.
Note: This change does not apply retroactively; students with the Associate degree notation/attribute on UMdegree will need to be manually updated if you find they have a non-passing grade in ENGL 1010/1020. Contact Keri Kerr (kerikerr@memphis.edu) to request the update.
Note: Because the full Gen Ed section will be visible, your student may have non-English sections that show as unfulfilled. Submit petitions asking that those sections be waived based on the student's AA/AS degree.
Look at the Banner screen SOAPCOL. If you don't have access to SOAPCOL, you can request of via this form.
International students without an official ACT or SAT score are automatically placed into the “enhanced” version of English 1010. Once they arrive stateside, they can take the ACCUPLACER test to attempt to be placed into the standard version. Also, any student (not just international) who has been placed into enhanced ENGL 1010 may take ACCUPLACER to attempt to place into standard ENGL 1010. Details on how to sign up for ACCUPLACER are here, and the required scores are:
Standard ENGL 1010: 250 and higher
Enhanced ENGL 1010: 237-249
Since Teams does not work like Zoom, we have to set up a reoccurring meeting, but mark it is as “Free” so that students can still schedule with you. See instructions below.
1. Open your Teams calendar and click the "+" button to create a new meeting.
2. Enter the meeting details and set the meeting for the entire day.
3. Underneath the date, click "Does not repeat" and set the meeting to repeat daily (or M - F) with an end date that is far in the future.
4. Select "Show as free" so you don't block your whole calendar.
5. Copy the meeting link and share it with whomever you need to meet. This will create the link you want to post in Teams.
