EMDR Drumming Protocol and Processes

Ongoing Projects, Outreach, and Activities

  • Two research projects from the music education department spearheaded by Ryan Fisher on facilitating wellness and mental health in musicians: “Mindfulness and performance anxiety - I Effect of Koru Mindfulness Training on University Musicians’ Music Performance Anxiety.” and “Mindfulness and performance anxiety II - Effect of Koru Mindfulness Training on Professional Orchestral Musicians’ Music Performance Anxiety.”
  • Marty Lang from the film studies department launched a film on the experiences of depression in a musician and one musician’s journey with the struggle of mental health and suicidal ideation.
  • Ongoing research headed up by Rick Bloomer, Dean of the College of Health Sciences, and CCFA colleagues on the effects of preventative physical therapy on the physical function of dancers and instrumentalists.
  • A collaborative research study with the Otolaryngology department at UTHSC, the mechanical Engineering department at UofM, and Speech Language Pathology department at UofM on the production of aerosolized particulates during stage speech and singing spearheaded by Miriam van Mersbergen.  The research obtained financial support from the Collaborative Research Network (CORNET) grant mechanism.
  • Dr. Susan Elswick and Gregory Washington's ongoing research studies include EMDR Drumming Protocol and Processes: Embedding Expressive Arts into EMDR.
  • The Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music's Graduate Certificate in Vocology provides the basic and applied science of voice production in the context of aesthetic and professional voice use to individuals seeking to teach voice technique to singers, actors, and professional voice users. This certificate bridges the gap between the vocal offerings of the School of Music and the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders -- students will take two courses from each institution, thereby expanding their experience and expertise.
  • UofM College of Communication and Fine Arts' 100% online Arts Entrepreneurship Grad Certificate will support students in developing an arts startup or creative entrepreneurship endeavor this fall. The certificate will aim for an overarching understanding of and work within entrepreneurship, including the history, social impact, and ethics of this type of work; learning how to articulate a vision for a particular product or idea; developing a business model alongside knowledge of leadership and management development; learning how to best frame, market, and promote a product or idea; culminating in a formal pitch of the idea to potential investors and other entrepreneurs.
