About Us

The Department of Military Science (Army ROTC) at the University of Memphis partners with Rhodes College, LeMoyne-Owen College, and Christian Brothers University to recruit, train, and educate leaders of character to commission as Officers for the Total Army (Active Duty, Army Reserve, Army National Guard). At the time of Commissioning, Cadets are intelectually fit, mentally fit, and physically fit. There is no service obligation to participate with Army ROTC at The University of Memphis during the Freshman or Sophomore years, it is simply a collge course on Leadership.

While on campus, Army ROTC Cadets experience a deliberate leadrship devolpment approach that is structured in a way that allows students to lead their peers while instructed by a world class group of Active Duty Professional Service Members and supported by an experienced Civilian Staff. Army ROTC at The University of Memphis has sent many Cadets to Army Specialty Schools to learn new skills and enhance leadership, such as the Airborne School and Air Assault School, and many Cadets to Romania, India, Brazil, Germany, Morocco, and other countries through internships.

Military Education at the University of Memphis began in 1982.  The Military Science office was originally located the Health Center.  As the university expanded the Army ROTC building was relocated to the former athletic dormitories in Hayden Hall, where it is presently located.  Army ROTC has been an important part of the university through community outreach and creating better citizens through a program that emphasizes the execution of one's civic and individual duties.
