Barry “The JazzJock” Ford has been on the air at WUMR since October of 1993. He has
worn several hats during his tenure having worked as one of the stations most familiar
talents as a DJ, a producer, and as a co play-by-play announcer for the University
of Memphis Tigers.
Barry has publicly represented WUMR on several occasions as emcee for numerous jazz
concerts around the Mid-South. He has introduced on stage jazz legends such as Grover
Washington, Jr., McCoy Tyner, Joe Sample, Lonnie Liston Smith, Kirk Whalum, Boney
James, Ahmad Jamal, James Moody, and Michael Franks, as well as popular groups like
The Rippingtons, The Yellow Jackets, The Branford Marsalis Trio, Pieces of A Dream
and Spyro Gyra to name a few. Barry has also worked at the former NewsTalk 790 WMC
as a Assistant Operations Manager, Field Reporter, Announcer/Producer, Copy Editor
and Substitute Talk-show Host, and was a frequent guest voice on Rock 103's Wake Up
Crew with Tim Spencer, Bev Hart and the late John "Bad Dog" McCormack.
Barry was introduced to radio in 1980 while attending the former Lambuth University
at WLAM in Jackson, TN. A native Memphian and United States Navy veteran, he works
professionally as an Information Systems Analyst.
As former host of the "Jazz 20 Countdown" every Saturday morning, The "JazzJock" remains
as one of the stations more venerable voices of jazz in Memphis.
