The University of Memphis Opera at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music will perform Summer and Smoke on Friday, November 30th, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. There will be another performance on Sunday, December 2nd at 3 p.m.

Lee Hoiby's opera is based on Tennessee William's 1948 play, which is set in 1910 Mississippi. It tells the story of childhood friends Alma Winemiller and Dr. Jon Buchanan. She is portrayed as a paragon of morality and he is considered a playboy.

The couple struggles to find a balance between their natures and a common ground for love. Copeland Woodruff will direct the production and Mark Ensley will conduct.
