Suzanne Downs Palmer Professors for academic year 2010-2011

The University of Memphis has named three faculty members as Suzanne Downs Palmer Professors for academic year 2010-2011. Now in its eighth year, the awards program recognizes individual faculty contributions to achieving the mission of the Fogelman College of Business & Economics. Each recipient received a recognition plaque and $10,000.

Dr. John Malloy

Dr. Julia Heath, professor of economics, was honored in the teaching category. Students often describe Heath as intelligent, passionate, organized, caring and patient. She has incorporated numerous imaginative and innovative teaching techniques into her courses and has developed several new classes. Heath’s influence also extends beyond the U of M campus. Through her workshops, she has trained more than 8,000 west Tennessee K-12 teachers on how to integrate economic and financial literacy into their classes.

Dr. Robin Poston, associate professor of management information systems, was recognized in the research category. Her research focuses on management’s strategic use of information systems. She has published two papers in A+ journals, one in an A-ranked journal and six in B-ranked journals. Poston has produced 12 refereed papers and was a finalist for MIS Quarterly Reviewer of the Year. She serves on the editorial review or advisory boards of three leading journals: Decision Sciences Journal, Journal of Database Management, andJournal of Organizational and End User Computing.

Dr. John Malloy, professor of accounting and taxation, received the award in the service category. He has served as a judge for the Memphis Business Journal Small Business Awards and as advisor for Beta Alpha Psi honor society. Malloy has been acting director of the School of Accountancy and has served on numerous university, Fogelman College and Accountancy committees. He developed the MBA specialty in entrepreneurship and directed the U of M’s Small Business Center for thee years. Malloy was named Golden Key Professor of the Year in 2008.

The professorships were established by a $400,000 gift to the Fogelman College by U of M alumnus Dan Palmer in memory of his late wife and in appreciation for his education at the University of Memphis.
