As the summer winds down, students should be preparing for the upcoming year. If your student will be freshmen, take some time to discuss what you both learned at Orientation and how you can utilize this information to have a successful freshman year. Help your student look at fall classes and discuss a weekly schedule to help manage classes, studying, work and social activities.

For returning students, take time to help them assess the past year and prepare for the coming year. Encourage them to think about participating in an internship or studying abroad.

What Parents Can Do

  • Discuss realistic expectations for academic success with your student.
  • Advise your student to develop an academic plan for their first semester.
  • Encourage your student to stay in contact with friends made at Orientation—this will help ease the transition during the first week of classes.

 Administrator Spotlight

Dr. Janann Sherman

Dr. Janann Sherman currently serves as the Chair of the History Department. At the age of thirty-five she began her college career at North Arkansas Community College, proving that it is never too late to earn a college education. She went on to receive her B.A. in Psychology and History from the College of the Ozarks, and a PhD in History from Rutgers University. Dr. Sherman joined the University of Memphis family in 1994 as a Professor of History. In 2004 she was named as the Chair of the History Department. She has published eight works including: No Place for a Woman: A Life of Senator Margaret Chase Smith, Walking On Air: The Aerial Adventures of Phoebe Omlie, and Dreamers. Thinkers. Doers: A Centennial History of the University of Memphis. Dr. Sherman does not describe herself as a traditional historian, rather she sees herself as a storyteller sharing stories with the average person.

Message to Parents and Students:

Dr. Sherman believes it is never too late to go back to school; this is especially true for nontraditional students. She encourages students to fully enjoy the experience of learning while at college. Moreover, she challenges students to not view history in the traditional sense. Majoring or minoring in history enables students to leave college with a great skill set applicable to many fields. Students in the History department develop skills in critical analysis and thinking, written and oral communication, research. This skill set allows students to work in a variety of fields such as business or education. Recently, the History Department was recognized by the American Historical Association for Best Practices in Online Teaching. Dr. Sherman credits this recognition to the quality of the professors and their commitment to providing quality courses to students. Moreover, the History Department now has completely online B.A. and M.A. programs.

Student Spotlight

Artice CarterArtice Carter is the daughter of Lula and Walter Carter. She is a native Memphian and graduate of Central High School. Artice is a senior Nonprofit Development and Administration major, who is also minoring in Political Science. Upon graduation she plans to complete graduate coursework in Sociology and participate in Teach for America. Artice aims to help others in all that she does; which is evident in her campus involvement. She is a Tiger Elite Ambassador, Orientation Guide, Community Service Chair for the Nonprofit Leader Student Association, and a peer mentor for the First Scholars Program. Artice says this about the U of M: "I love that the university is a safe haven that gives students many opportunities to build themselves as leaders on and off campus. I enjoy seeing my peers discover their passions, and hope many of them will stay true to the tiger family and be assets to the Memphis community upon graduation, as is my plan."

Frosh Camp.  Frosh Camp is a once in a lifetime opportunity for incoming freshman to meet and connect with other incoming freshmen. In addition, students will be able to learn about the many facets of college life and the "secret" to making the next four years both successful and memorable.  For more information, click here.

New Campus Shuttle-bus Service. To assist people in getting from place to place and from class to class on its largely pedestrian campus, the University of Memphis will institute a new shuttle-bus service, The Blue Line. Read more...

 2012-2013 Parent Calendars. For our upperclassmen parents, we have some Parent Calendars available. To request one, please email us at parents@memphis.edu with your name and mailing address.  While there is no charge, we are requesting that those who receive the calendars make a donation to our Parent Fund to help us continue to provide the calendars and other services to you, our parents.

Financial Aid Office

The start of the 2012-2013 academic year is right around the corner! We hope you had an opportunity to review your student's myMemphis account (also known as 'student portal'), since most information is now in an electronic format. Listed below are the steps to navigate your way to your student's financial aid status and/or award information.

For Aid Status:

  • Check under Financial Aid Requirements for any red flags
  • Read the message or click on the hyperlink provided
  • Take action or submit forms/documents to the Student Financial Aid Office

For Award Information:

  • Scroll down, then click on the Financial Aid Awards link
  • Select the Aid Year 2012-2013, then Submit
  • Read the information under the General Information tab
  • Click on the Terms and Conditions tab, then scroll down to 'Accept
  • Click on the Accept Award Offer tab
  • Click on the drop down box next to your award OFFER, select an option, then submit your decision (You'll note that the Accept Award Offer tab is not clickable/activated.)

Students are encouraged to monitor their myMemphis account on a regular basis for continuous updates throughout the Summer months. First time borrowers who accepted all or any portion of their federal student loans will have other requirements posted on their portal.

If you have not yet completed the 2012-2013 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), it is not too late. Go to www.fafsa.gov and utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Tool provided to expedite the process. Students who qualify for the HOPE Lottery Scholarship are required to complete the FAFSA.

There's a LOT of NEW federal regulation changes effective the 2012-2013 academic year. Stay informed by visiting our website at www.memphis.edu/financialaid.  Scroll down to "What's New for 2012-2013?" Please take the time to read through this, as it may affect your student's current and/or future federal financial aid eligibility.

Please note that students are responsible for activating their University of Memphis e-mail account, which is our official means of communicating to our students. In addition, students are highly encouraged to check their myMemphis account regularly for updated information.

Also, kindly ask that your student learn their U-ID number. To locate their U-ID number on their myMemphis account, follow the instructions at the link listed below. The U-ID is used in lieu of their SSN to protect their identity.

If your student has any questions or concerns, please have him/her call the financial aid office at (901) 678-4825 or visit in Room 103 in Wilder Tower.

If you have a scholarship inquiry, including the HOPE Lottery Scholarship, please contact the Scholarship Office directly at (901) 678-3213 or go to Room 107 in Wilder Tower.

Fall 2012 CHECK-IN PROCEDURES

The residence halls will be open during the following hours for check-in. These are times students may pick up their key. Students may move their belongings in anytime at their convenience after they pick up their key.

Thursday, August 23, 2012 – 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM

  • Residents of Freshmen First Floor (Richardson Towers North and Richardson Towers South 7th floors)
  • Emerging Leaders and Honors Program Residents
  • Living Learning Complex Residents

Friday, August 24, 2012 – 10 AM – Noon

  • Rawls Hall Residents

Friday, August 24, 2012- 1 PM – 4:30 PM

Failure to claim a room by 4:30 PM on Saturday, August 25, 2012, will result in the loss of the room assignment and forfeiture of the $200 rental prepayment. If a student is unable to check-in by 4:30 PM on Saturday, August 25, 2012, they must contact the Residence Life Office at 901-678-2295 and request to be placed on the Late Arrivals List to avoid the forfeiture of the $200 rental prepayment and the loss of the housing assignment.

Educational Support Programs

Please check out Educational Support Program (ESP)! The offices are open all summer long if students want to come by to talk about their fall schedule and how ESP can help them be successful. The main offices are located in 217 Mitchell and 207 Mitchell. Also, student should be on the lookout for fall seminars ESPecially for them!

Women's Basketball to Open 2012-13 Season in Preseason WNIT. The University of Memphis women's basketball team will open its 2012-13 season by participating in the Preseason WNIT tournament it was announced by tournament organizers, Tuesday. Memphis will be joined in the 16-team tournament field by Davidson, Delaware, Duquesne, Georgetown, Grambling State, Illinois State, Iowa, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Middle Tennessee, Morehead State, North Carolina, Northern Illinois, Sacred Heart and Sam Houston State. Coach Justin Fuente Hosts First Annual Memphis Women's Clinic on Thursday, July 19. Limited seats remain for University of Memphis head football coach Justin Fuente's first annual women's clinic on Thursday, July 19. The women only event titled Football by Fuente is open to all ages and will be held at the Billy J. Murphy Athletic Complex on the U of M Park Avenue Campus in the newly renovated Team Room. Read more...


Fun Fact and Quote 

Fun Fact: As we wind down our Centennial Celebration here at the U of M, it is important to reflect and remember where it all started.  The first three buildings on the U of M (then the West Tennessee Normal School) were the President's House, Mynder's Hall, and the Administration Building (circa 1912).  Today, the Administration Building is the oldest building on campus, and Mynders Hall is the oldest residence hall on campus.
