In February, students will now be a month into the second semester of the year. If
your student is unhappy with any of his or her courses and is considering dropping
a class, be sure this is done by the deadline. Click here to visit the Spring 2014 Dates and Deadlines calendar.
If students joined any clubs or organizations in the fall, they may wish to rejoin
that club this semester. If a particular club wasn't right for the student, encourage
him or her to look around for other clubs that the U of M has to offer.
What Parents Can Do...
- Relationships are a focus during this month, and your student may need you to listen
as they talk about experiences with friends and significant others.
- Have faith in your student's ability to make his or her own decisions
- The U of M provides various opportunities to learn outside the classroom. Many organizations
offer free programs with well-known speakers to help add to the students' knowledge
of their world. Suggest your student attend some of these programs.
- Encourage your student to begin thinking about making a decision on housing for the

Tutoring @ ESP
It may be time for students to visit Tutoring@ESP, especially before or after their first tests. Students who talk with us about their
upcoming tests and those that talk to us about their testing experiences have improved
outcomes on the next tests or exams. Students often equate spending long hours of
preparation with being ready for the test(s). Talking to someone who understands both
the content and test taking empowers students to learn about themselves and learn
how to learn and accomplish more academically. Tutoring@ESP has multiple locations with day hours of 8:00 am- 7:00pm and no appointments are
necessary. Evening hours (7:00pm-10:00pm)are at the Residence Hall Learning Centers
in Richardson Towers and Living Learning Complex. FYI: Since the learning centers
opened for spring semester, almost 1,600 student visits have been logged!
The University of Memphis Student Health Center sends STUDENT HEALTH 101 E-journal to all students monthly. It is a great resource for health/wellness and university
student issues. The company also produces The Parent Perspective, with shortened articles and ideas for parent involvement to assist your students
in being the best they can be! We know that things have changed in the last 20 years,
and studies show that parents are far more involved with their student’s lives than
ever before. At the same time, we also know that students often cite their parents
as the top 1 or 2 sources of wellness information. It is our hope that this e-journal
will assist you with current health and wellness issues and provide some conversational
topics. Click here to view.
National Survey of Student Engagement
Is your student a first-year or senior student? Encourage them to take the National
Survey of Student Engagement.
The University of Memphis is participating in the National Survey of Student Engagement
(NSSE), which assesses the extent to which students are engaged in their classroom
and out of classroom activities. The survey is administered every two to three years
to any first-year (freshman) or senior student that has been on the University of
Memphis campus for at least one previous semester. Participation will help the University
of Memphis learn students’ perspectives, benchmark against other Tennessee Board of
Regents institutions, and glean comparison data against universities and colleges
nationwide. Please encourage your student to complete the survey, which they should
have received on February 11th.
Encourage your student to keep up with technology on campus by connecting to umTech
on Facebook and Twitter. Helpdesk and Computer Lab holiday hour changes, and a variety
of other topics related to the University of Memphis are posted.
