UMparent E-news: April 2013 Edition

The U of M offers a wide range of classes for students who are interested in getting ahead of the game. Taking a summer class is a great way for students to keep their academic skills sharp. Most classes last four to six weeks.

Although some students may find the rigorous pace of summer classes intimidating, the rewards of being closer to graduation can make it worth the extra effort.

What Parents Can Do:

  • Talk with your returning student ahead of time about your expectations while they are living at home.
  • Be sure your student has registered for fall and has made housing arrangements for the semester.
  • Welcome your student home for summer break!

SPRING 2013 FINAL EXAMS

Final exams begin Friday, May 3 and run through Thursday, May 9. View the Spring 2013 Final Exams Schedule.

PARENTS AND GRADES

Students will be able to view their final, official Spring 2013 grades online beginning Thursday, May 16. So, they will also be able to show you their grades starting on that date.

But is there some way you, instead of my student, can show me his or her grades? This may surprise you, but No, we aren’t allowed to do that. Federal law prevents us from releasing a student's education record to anyone but the student unless (1) we have the student’s written consent to do so, or (2) you can show us that your student is still a dependent for federal income tax purposes. The specific law is the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

We recommend that you follow this procedure and that you talk to your student at each stage:

  • Ask your student to show you his or her grades on Student Self Service.
  • If this isn't practical, ask your student to complete a “Student Consent to Release Education Record” form that would permit the Registrar to release a copy of the grades to you. For further information, including a link to the form, see Student Consent to Release Education Record.
  • If your student is unwilling to complete the consent form, you can complete a “Request for Disclosure of Education Record Information” form, provided your student is a dependent for tax purposes. For further information, including a link to the form, see Parent Access to Student Education Record.

SUMMER and FALL 2013 REGISTRATION

Fee Policies for Summer and Fall Semester

Please be aware of fee payment deadlines for Summer and Fall 2013. The Fee Payment Deadline is the day prior to the first day of classes. For example, the Summer 2013 fee payment deadline is Friday, May 10 and the Fall 2013 fee payment deadline is Friday, August 23. Students who have not met the fee payment deadline as posted on the Bursar webpage will have the courses for which they are registered deleted. Beginning with the first day of Late Registration, May 11 for Summer 2013 and August 24 for Fall 2013, students will be able to re-register for courses that have available space, but will be assessed a $100 Late Registration Fee in addition to regular tuition and fees.

Students will be allowed to adjust their schedule until the end of the late registration period. Students not paid by the close of the late registration period will have an additional $100 late payment fee assessed. If still unpaid at close of business on the day AFTER the close of late registration, students will have all their classes deleted from their schedule. Students whose classes are deleted for non-payment after the late registration fee payment deadline, and whose request to be reinstated is approved, must prepay all fees in full, including the assessment of a $100 Late Registration Fee and a $100 Late Payment Fee. Students who receive permission to register after Late Registration from the Dean of their major must prepay all fees in full, including the assessment of a $100 Late Registration Fee and a $100 Late Payment Fee, prior to being registered.

Information regarding fee payment is available on the Bursar’s webpage

Bursar's Office

Students should check their accounts online on TigerXpress (through the Account$ tab on the myMemphis portal) to ensure that they do not have a hold on registration or grades due to outstanding debt.

Invoices will be available on TigerXpress in late April for Summer and late July for Fall registrations. Emails will be sent to students and authorized users notifying them when invoices are available. Students remain responsible for completing the fee payment process by the appropriate fee payment deadline, even if they do not receive or open the fee invoice.

The Summer Fee Payment Deadline is dependent upon what day your student registers for any summer part-of-term courses, and not when the courses will actually meet.  For students who register for pre-session only or pre-session and any other part-of-term courses from April 1-May 10, 2013, all fees are due May 10, 2013, by 4:30pm to avoid deletion of classes.

NEW FEE PAYMENT POLICY: The calendar for deletion of classes for non-payment will be changed to before the first day of class for the semester in order to remain in compliance with federal financial aid requirements. Carefully review the registration dates and the corresponding fee payment/deletion deadlines on the Bursar's semester calendar.

Fees can be paid by credit card or e-check online on TigerXpress.

If your student is expecting to receive excess financial aid/scholarships, they should enroll in eRefunds (direct deposit) on TigerXpress by May 27, 2013, for earliest refund of Summer excess financial aid/scholarships.

Your student can enroll you as an Authorized User to enable you to receive email notification when invoices are available.  If you are an authorized user, you can access your student’s account on TigerXpress to view/pay fees through this log in here.

Fun Fact and Quote

Fun Fact: The university has changed names five times. The school began in 1912 as West Tennessee State Normal School. The first name change was in 1925 when it became West Tennessee State Teachers College. From 1941 to 1957 the school was known as Memphis State College. The next change, to Memphis State University, occurred in 1957 and lasted for a longer period. In 1994 the last change occurred when the school gained its current name: the University of Memphis.
