Robert A. "Bob" Hetherington holds degrees from The College of Wooster and Northwestern University. He joined the University of Memphis in 1997 as Chair of the Department of Theatre & Dance and supervisor of the graduate directing program.

His teaching specialties are in the areas of directing, theatre history and dramatic literature. His professional directing credits outside of Memphis include work at The Stratford Festival of Canada, where he worked during four seasons and is a two-time recipient of a Tyrone Guthrie Award; Resident Director for The Human Race Theatre Company in Dayton, Ohio; Contemporary American Theatre Company in Columbus, Ohio; Dayton Opera, and recently a residence at Canada's Shaw Festival.  He is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers (SSDC).
