Local historian Jimmy Ogle will discuss the areas surrounding the University of Memphis
during his presentation of “Know Your Neighborhood” at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22,
in the University of Memphis Ned R. McWherter Library, second floor west side study
area. Admission is free and open to the public.
Ogle’s talk will focus on the neighborhoods around the University. He will discuss
sections of the city of Memphis, the history of the U of M, the six neighborhood districts,
some lost aspects of the past, and prospects for the future.
Ogle’s professional background has provided him with plenty of opportunities to absorb
Memphis history. He has served as director of operations for the Memphis Rock ‘n’
Soul Museum and vice president of operations at Performa Entertainment Real Estate,
the managing company for the Beale Street Historic District. Ogle has been general
manager for the Memphis Queen Line and Mud Island. He also conducts lunchtime walking
tours of Downtown.
Parking for the event is available in the Innovation Drive and Zach Curlin garages,
or in the Southern Avenue parking lot.
The program is sponsored by the University Libraries, with support from Friends of
the University Libraries. For more information, contact Tom Mendina at 901-678-4310
