Four University of Memphis faculty members will bring hands-on science and math learning to two local charter schools through National Lab Day, an effort to improve the quality of teaching of STEM disciplines – science, technology, engineering, and math – in schools across the country. The Lab Day goal is to support education by bringing more hands-on, inquiry-based lab experiences to students.

Dr. Angiline Powell, Dr. Sanghee Choi, Dr. Allen Seed, and Andrea Reeder are members of eMAST, an electronic, math, science, and technology group in the College of Education’s Department of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership. On two different occasions, they will present four different learning experiences to about 200 students: Thursday, May 13, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Memphis Business Academy, 3333 Old Brownsville Road; and Friday, May 14, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering, 20 Dudley Street.

The sessions will include “Blue Bottle/Cell Size,” “Fractions and Manipulatives,” “Shoreline Research,” and “Bubbleology: The Science of Bubbles.”
