The Basic Aerospace Workshop at the University of Memphis lets local teachers learn
more about aviation science during their summer break.
Set for June 8-26, the workshop covers aviation and space technology and is open to
K-12 teachers and administrators in public and private schools in West Tennessee.
It is funded by a grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation. There are
11 scholarships available.
Tuition is free, and participants earn three hours of undergraduate or graduate credit
and two hours of flight instruction at a local airport.
Teachers in the annual workshop will attend daily classes at the U of M and take field
trips to aviation sites and facilities, including a three-day visit to the U.S. Space
& Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala.
The goal of the workshop is to develop an understanding of aerospace concepts and
skills, to explore the role of aerospace technology in Tennessee, and to provide teachers
with resources for classroom instruction and information about aerospace careers.
Applications are due by May 15. For an application or more information, contact Bonnie Cummings by phone at 901-678-5356,
