Jade Powell, a senior honors student at the University of Memphis majoring in Asian
Studies and International Trade, has received a Boren Scholarship to study in China
during the 2010-2011 academic year. Powell will study Chinese language and culture
at the Beijing Language and Culture University and at X’ian International Studies
University.
David L. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are sponsored by the National Security
Education Program, a federal initiative designed to build a broader and more qualified
pool of U.S. citizens with foreign language and international skills.
“I feel very honored to have been awarded the Boren Scholarship,” Powell said. “It
provides a great opportunity to further my studies, broaden my understanding and knowledge
of another culture, and apply it in a way that can benefit my future, as well as my
government’s understanding of a culture that is now greatly tied to it.”
“Jade is one of our distinguished Asian Studies and International Trade program students,”
said Dr. Hsiang-te Kung, director of the Confucius Institute at the University of
Memphis. “She took my honors class on global challenge two or three years ago and
then went to China to study in the winter. We are very proud of her achievement, and
we are happy to see she received the Boren Scholarship that will allow her to study
in China for a year.”
Jade’s parents are Jim and Diane Powell of Memphis.
