New Veterans’ Benefits Law Goes Into Effect August 1

The “New GI Bill,” officially called the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008, will become effective August 1, 2009.

For veterans who have served at least 90 days or more of active duty since September 11, 2001, the bill will provide various levels of education benefits, up to the total cost of tuition and fees covering study at any public institution in any state where a veteran may attend school, plus a housing stipend.

The benefits are more generous than those currently available to veterans under the Montgomery GI Bill.

Details of the new GI Bill are available online at www.gibill.va.gov or at www.gibill.va.gov/GI_Bill_Info/benefits.htm#CH33 or by calling toll-free 1-888-GI-BILL-1 (888-442-4551).
