Dr. Kevin H. Smith, Thomas B. Preston Professor of Law at the Cecil C. Humphreys School
of Law at the University of Memphis, has been named dean of the School. He succeeds
Dean Emeritus James Smoot.
Smith joined the U of M law school faculty in 1993. He has served as interim dean
since October 2007.
In making the announcement, U of M Provost Ralph Faudree said of Smith, “He is an
excellent professor, an active scholar, and he has been the recipient of numerous
awards and honors including the Preston Professorship. President Raines and I look
forward to his leadership during this time of opportunity and challenge as the Law
School transitions to a downtown facility next year.”
In addition to his administrative duties at the U of M, Smith has taught jurisprudence,
business organizations, commercial paper, secured transactions, social science and
statistics in the law, and law, science, and technology.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from Drake University, and a master’s degree, a doctor
of philosophy degree, and a juris doctorate, all from the University of Iowa.
Smith has practiced law in Towson, Maryland, and he taught as a visiting professor
at Notre Dame Law School, at Chicago-Kent College of Law, and in the Department of
Political Science at Northern Illinois University.
His articles on a variety of legal topics have been published in numerous law journals
throughout the United States.
