For release: February 13, 2008

For press information, contact Kelly McFall at 901/678-5389

The U of M community has the opportunity to assist students at Union University who were victims of a tornado earlier this month. Staffed by student volunteers, tables for the collection of donations will be set up on the U of M campus in front of the Tiger Den, inside Wilder Tower, and inside or in front of the McWherter Library.

The collection sites will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, and the same hours Monday through Thursday, February 18-21.

Donations of cash, checks, or retail store gift cards (for example, Target, Wal-Mart, Lowe's, Home Depot) will be accepted. Persons who would like to mail checks should make them out to “PRSSA" and send them to: PRSSA, the University of Memphis, Meeman Journalism Building Room 300, Memphis, Tennessee, 38152.

The U of M Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) initiated the project, which is also supported by other student organizations, the University's Division of Student Affairs, and two off-campus organizations – the College Ministry of Bellevue Baptist Church and the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature.

Leading the PRSSA effort are U of M students Kelly McFall, vice president of regional activities on PRSSA's national committee, and local chapter president Tiffany Riggs. More information about the project is available from McFall by phone at 901-678-5389 or via e-mail at rmcfall@memphis.edu

Union University, a Baptist-affiliated college of 1,500 students in Jackson, Tenn., was hit hard by one of several tornadoes that raced across the Mid-South on February 5. Several residence halls were destroyed, and though there were no deaths or no life-threatening injuries, many students lost their cars, personal belongings, and college dormitory rooms as a result of the storm. Up-to-date information about Union's recovery is available on the Web at www.uurecovery.com

Founded in 1968 by the national Public Relations Society of America, PRSSA is the pre-eminent pre-professional public relations organization. It has more than 9,600 members in 287 chapters on college campuses in 43 states and the District of Columbia.
