We invite you to join the Spindel and the Bornblum families in helping to build the philosophical community at the University of Memphis.
Our funding needs include the following:
Philosophy Enrichment Fund
The Department of Philosophy exists for its students. Our exceptional students — graduate
and undergraduate — come from all over the world to study with us. They come to study
with faculty who foster their desire to understand, ignite their curiosity, and provide
them with the very best philosophical education. In this way, faculty represent the
backbone of our department. We recruit young philosophy faculty from the very best
PhD programs home and abroad. Recent hires include those from the University of Michigan, DePaul University, and the University of Oxford.
Nancy Simco Speaker Series Fund
Professor Nancy Simco was the Chair of the Philosophy Department for 19 years. Upon her retirement, the
faculty established a speaker series fund to honor her commitment to undergraduate
and graduate education. This fund provides the resources to bring some of the most
distinguished thinkers from this country and abroad to the University of Memphis.
Members of both the University and local communities benefit from the opportunity
to interact with scholars who are defining the philosophical landscape in the 21st
A successful Memphis businessman, Murray Spindel, was a dedicated philosopher who
often took courses at the University of Memphis. In 1981, Murray endowed the Spindel
Fund which supports both an annual philosophy conference and a dissertation fellowship.
Since his death in 1999, Murray's wife, Chris, has continued the Spindel family's
support of the department.
The Spindel Conference brings to campus each fall the highest caliber of philosophers
from around the world. The conference has greatly enhanced the intellectual life of
the campus by enabling undergraduates to interact with the top scholars in philosophy
and by inviting the community to discuss provocative ideas. The Spindel Conference
is both a scholarly and social event and has come to define what is best about philosophy
in Memphis and what Murray Spindel loved most: the friendly, but lively and engaging
pursuit of truth. Information about recent and upcoming Spindel Conference may be
found here. Contents of past Spindel Supplements (published by The Southern Journal of Philosophy) may be found here.
Spindel Dissertation Fellowship
The dissertation fellowship was designed to assist students in the very last stages
of the writing process. It provides financial support so that a student can commit
full attention to writing without the need to teach courses or pursue other means
Also a successful Memphis businessman and a dedicated philosopher, Bert Bornblum has,
with the support of his family, made numerous contributions to our graduate programs
Bornblum Graduate Student Travel Fund
The Graduate Student Travel Fund was endowed by Bert's son, David, in honor of his
father. It provides, on a competitive basis, funds to minimize the cost of travel
for graduate students presenting work at professional conferences.
Bornblum Scholars Fund
The Scholars Fund provides the funds necessary to offer highly competitive stipends
to exceptional Ph.D students.
