The Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music at the University of Memphis announces "A Concert in Celebration of the Life of Charlie Riecker" to be presented on Friday, September 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Harris Concert Hall (3775 Central Avenue). Mr. Riecker, who passed away in August, was the School's Hohenberg-Scheidt Distinguished Visiting Artist. He retired from the Metropolitan Opera in the spring of 1997, leaving behind a remarkable career that spanned four decades and encompassed management positions including Artistic Administrator, Tour Director, and Artistic Liaison.
Performers for the concert will include Kallen Esperian and members of the University of Memphis Opera. According to Mark Ensley, Director of Opera Activities at the School, "[Riecker's] was a life that really mattered…because of his artistry and musicianship, but more importantly, because of his humanity."
While at the Metropolitan, Mr. Riecker worked closely with the development and execution of television and recording projects, the pioneering of outdoor concerts, artistic participation in fundraising, and special programming. He continued to serve as an adjudicator for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, as well as for the Puccini Foundation
Competition and the Birgit Nilsson Award. He was Co-Artistic Director of the Opera Institute of California and a Visiting Guest Artist on the faculties of California State University, the University of Maryland, and the Manhattan School of Music. The concert is free and open to the public.
