The 20th annual Black Scholars Unlimited Breakfast will be held Saturday, October 27, at 8:30 a.m. at the University Holiday Inn, 3700 Central. The breakfast recognizes all African-American scholarship recipients at the University of Memphis and their families.
The featured speaker for this year’s event will be Dr. Sidney Malone (BBA ’90, MS ’92), founder and CEO of New Growth International and pastor of New Growth in Christ Christian Center.
“The aim of the occasion is to encourage all scholars to continue to strive for academic excellence and to maintain scholastic achievement,” said Lonnie Latham, associate dean of students for minority affairs. Latham estimates that 1,700 students have been honored during the history of the event.
There will also be a reception on Friday, Oct. 26, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Michael D. Rose Theatre. Former scholars will meet with current members to discuss the importance of maintaining their scholarships and preparing for the future.
Black Scholars Unlimited is open to all students who have attended the U of M for at least one semester, completed 12 hours of coursework, and maintained a minimum 3.0 grade point average. The organization inducts about 100 new members each spring.
