Can I make a go of it in Europe? The new Memphis Opera & Song Academy at the University of Memphis' Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music will help answer that question for aspiring opera singers this summer.

The intensive two-week program which begins May 20, 2007 is presented in conjunction with the University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music and the Chamber Opera of Hamburg. This intensive two-week program is unique in that it focuses on preparing students for auditioning and performing in the opera houses of Europe. Master classes on musical and dramatic interpretation are combined with practical instruction on the German theatre system. Topics such as contract negotiation audition preparation and living and working in Europe are thoroughly discussed as students prepare for a grand finale performance of German opera scenes and Lieder.

Participants of the Memphis Opera & Song Academy will benefit from the experience of directors Susan Owen-Leinert and Michael Leinert. Ms. Owen-Leinert, a dramatic soprano, built a successful international singing career at opera houses in Germany (Berlin, Munich, Dresden, Kassel), Italy (Bologna, Triest), France, Belgium and the U.S. Michael Leinert, a long-time General Manager and Artistic Director of opera houses in Germany, has been stage director of successful opera and theatre productions in Europe and the U.S. and has taught at the Universities of Hamburg, Munich and Duesseldorf.

Also on the faculty are Klaus Dieter Jung, Music Director of the Hamburg Chamber Opera, one of the conductors of the Wiener Sängerknaben (with concerts in Germany, Austria, England, Ireland, Netherlands, U.S.A. and Sri Lanka) and an experienced teacher for young singers at the Song Academy of Hamburg, and U of M Director of Opera Studies Mark Ensley.

The program will conclude with a performance of songs, arias and opera scenes performed by Academy participants on Saturday, June 2 at 7:30 pm (Central time) in the University's Harris Concert Hall (3775 Central Avenue). The concert is free and open to the public.

Registration for the Memphis Opera & Song Academy has begun. Vocalists interested in enrolling can find more information at http://operasongacademy.memphis.edu.
