The University of Memphis will officially kick off construction of its new University Center on Aug. 27, the first day of classes for the fall semester. Students, faculty, staff, and special guests will have the opportunity to leave their mark on the building by signing their names and messages on beams, which will later be used in the construction of the Center.
The event will be held at 3:15 p.m., immediately following Freshman Convocation. It will take place between the Administration Building and the construction site.
The new 170,000-square-foot University Center is the largest building project on the U of M campus since the completion of the Ned McWherter Library in 1994. Scheduled for completion in fall 2009, the $46 million building will include a grand atrium, food court and full-service restaurant, conference rooms, a 350-seat theatre, a state-of-the-art ballroom, a copy center, and a 24-hour computer lab. In addition, the new UC will house offices for a variety of registered student organization and University departments.
