Care Expert Will Address U of M Graduates Aug. 15

Dr.
Cyril Chang, an expert on economic issues related to health
care, will address 648 graduates at the University of Memphis'
summer commencement Sunday, Aug. 15. Ceremonies will begin
at 3 p.m. at The Pyramid.
Chang,
a professor of economics, is the recipient of the 2004 Board
of Visitors Eminent Faculty Award. The award recognizes exceptional
and sustained contributions to scholarly and creative achievement,
teaching, and service, all of which bring recognition to the
University.
A
faculty member at the University since 1981, Chang teaches
health care and executive MBA economics at the U of M. He
is also a voluntary professor in the department of preventive
medicine in the College of Medicine and the department of
community nursing in the College of Nursing at the University
of Tennessee Health Science Center.
Chang
also is director of the Methodist LeBonheur Center for Health
Care Economics, housed in the U of M's Fogelman College of
Business and Economics. The Center was established last year
to improve the efficiency of governmental medical programs
and study the impact of regional and state trends in health
care.
Among
Chang's areas of research are the high costs of health care
and health insurance premiums, TennCare problems and their
impact on the community, and mental health care.
Chang
has received numerous awards, including the University's Distinguished
Teaching Award, Distinguished Research Award, and the Suzanne
Downs Palmer Professorship.
He
earned an undergraduate degree in economics from National
Chengchi University in Taiwan in 1969 and a master's degree
from the U of M in 1972. He earned a doctorate in economics
from the University of Virginia in 1979.
