Artist James Clar, the first FedEx Institute of Technology Lantana Artist in Residence, will exhibit a large outdoor interactive art piece during the South Main District's Art Trolley Tour April 28, 6-9 p.m.
Clar's work focuses on the study of light and its properties to design information systems with ground level control. His latest and largest piece to date, "Inside/Out", will reside on 10 Memphis rooftops in the South Main Art District. On the night of the Trolley Tour, the level of activity within each building will be monitored by sensors. That information will be relayed to a lighting system on the rooftops of the buildings, which will display the activity visually. The inside information will be on the outside of the building, thus inspiring the title "Inside/Out".
Other Clar pieces will be available for viewing April 26-May 2 at SubSpaceSouth Gallery on South Main Street. The gallery will be open to the public on the evening of April 28. After that, the exhibit will be shown by appointment only. To schedule a viewing, call the gallery at 800-519-5230.
Clar has received recognition from numerous publications, including the Design Distinction Award from I.D. Magazine 2004 for his thesis project at New York University. He has done work at Benetton's Fabrica design facility in Italy, and he was an artist in residence at Eyebeam Atelier in New York. Galleries that have exhibited his work include the New Museum of Contemporary Arts, Chelsea Art Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art, Milan Trienniale, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
