Autism Spectrum Disorders

Several programs are offered for young children with significant communication impairments secondary to Autism Spectrum Disorders or mental handicapping conditions. Visual supports (picture + graphics) are utilized to enhance processing of auditory information, elicit verbal expression, and provide an augmentative support to verbal communication. Individualized goals are embedded into functional age-appropriate play and social skills activities. Parent training and involvement is encouraged.

The Summer Language Camp is an intensive program designed to assist school-aged children with language disorders to integrate their learned skills into functional activities presented in thematic units. Sessions are conducted in clinic and community based settings for application of learned communication skills. Treatment goals are individualized within the context of the activities of the group. The program is aimed at, but not limited to, children whose communication issues are secondary to Autism Spectrum Disorders, mental handicapping conditions, or severe learning disabilities. Visual supports (picture + graphics) are utilized to enhance processing of auditory information, elicit verbal expression, and provide an augmentative support to verbal communication.

Social Skills Group for Adults is intended for young adults, ages 18-35, who have Asperger’s Syndrome or High Functioning Autism. Skills addressed are based on individual needs and may include eye gaze shifts; conversational turn taking, respecting personal space; topic maintenance in conversations; job related social skills; reading non-verbal cues from others; and understanding idioms, inferences, and metaphors.
