The University of Memphis Band Alumni Chapter will host its annual high school marching
band contest, the Bandmasters Championship, Saturday, Oct. 27, at Liberty Bowl Memorial
Stadium. Competing bands will begin performing at 1 p.m., and the U of M’s marching
band, “The Mighty Sound of the South,” will perform at 9:15 p.m. The stadium gates
will open at noon.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students. Children age six and under are free.
Proceeds will go toward scholarships for the U of M marching band.
Originally known as The Mid-South Invitational, The Bandmasters Championship began
in 1963. In the 1990s, the Band Alumni Chapter took responsibility for the event,
which has hosted marching bands from Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kentucky, Florida,
and Alabama. Last year 38 bands competed, the most ever in the Bandmasters Championship.
Munford High School was the 2011 grand champion.
