With a history dating to 1985, Peace Day will be celebrated at the Barbara K. Lipman
Early Childhood School and Research Institute on Friday, Oct. 21. Peaceful activities
for the children will begin in their classrooms at 9:30 a.m., followed by the “Wings
of Grace” presentation by Autumn Morningstar, a well-known Native American storyteller
and magician at 10:30 a.m. Part of Morningstar’s program will include the release
of a peace dove.
At 11:30 a.m. children and their families will gather in the pecan grove adjacent
to the School for a multicultural “peace-nic” lunch. The families will share potluck
dishes that are representative of their various native cultures.
The Lipman School has a long tradition of diversity/anti-bias educational practices.
The School’s first “Multicultural Luncheon” was held in 1985 and continued until 2001.
After the terrorist bombings on Sept. 11, 2001, School teachers and administrators
decided to have the event focus on the concepts of peace and justice. They also decided
that the new Peace Day Celebration should fall on or close to Oct. 24, which is United
Nations Day and the birthday of the School’s namesake, Mrs. Barbara K. Lipman.
