Join WUMR for its fall radiothon Nov. 29 through Dec. 2, and pledge support to the
Mid-South’s only exclusively jazz radio station. Themed “Jazz for the Holidays,” this
year’s condensed format is based on the station’s frequency, 91.7, and will begin
at 9:17 a.m. Thursday and last until 9:17 p.m. Sunday.
The radiothon’s format was changed in response to feedback from listeners, who requested
it be shortened from the customary seven-day event.
Pledges may be made by phone by calling 901-678-4000, or they may be made online at
http://wumr.memphis.edu. Online pledges can be taken at any time during the year, not just during the radiothon.
All donations to the station support general operations, so WUMR can continue to provide
specialized programming to its audience.
Known as “The Jazz Lover,” the 25,000-watt station serves listeners within a 60-mile
radius of Memphis and streams online as well, providing music to jazz lovers around
the world. WUMR’s playlist blends contemporary and traditional jazz with a touch of
fusion, Latin, and New Age music. Staffed almost entirely by students and volunteers,
it serves the area with educational, sports and community service programming.
WUMR functions as a learning laboratory for students in the Department of Communication
in the College of Communication and Fine Arts, providing them with experience in announcing,
news reporting and writing, talk show hosting, and sportscasting. In addition to on-air
positions, students serve in management roles in various departments, including music,
production, traffic, news and sports.
