University of Memphis honor societies Phi Kappa Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa hosted
an Honors Assembly recognizing outstanding students from 12 different areas on Sunday,
Approximately 150 students received awards, honors, and scholarships, covering the
period from summer 2012 through this spring.
Colleges and programs honored students for superior academic performance, creative
achievement, research and service. Awards were presented from the Herff College of
Engineering, the Fogelman College of Business & Economics, the College of Communication
and Fine Arts, the University College, the College of Arts & Sciences, the College
of Education, Health and Human Sciences, the Loewenberg School of Nursing, the Graduate
School, the Departments of Aerospace Studies, Military Science and Naval Science,
and the Helen Hardin Honors Program.
One of the Special Awards presented was the Donald K. Carson Leadership Scholarship,
named for the University’s former longtime vice president for student affairs. It
was presented to Benjamin Daniel, Jalen Griggs, Robert Marsico and Tauja Merriweather.
Melanie Sparks, a senior chemistry major, received three awards: The Chi Beta Phi
Science Award, the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Student, and the Helen
Hardin Honors Program Director’s Award for Scholarship.
Awards for highest grade-point average for undergraduates went to: Sean McEvoy, August
2012; Margaret Hoyt, December 2012; Jennifer Borwick, Cody Fernandez, Brandon Harris,
Bailey Pembroke, Gretchin Reich, Emily Simpson, Nicole Thornton and Melissa Warbritton,
