Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Midshipmen and their active duty Naval Science instructors from around the nation will meet on campus Saturday, April 2, for the Fourth Annual Reserve Officers Training Corps Drill Meet, sponsored by the University of Memphis Naval ROTC.

Students and instructors from 15 units across the country will participate.  Among the schools represented will be Ohio State, Illinois State, Savannah State, Purdue, and Marion Military Institute.  Also sending units are the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Illinois, the University of Maryland, the University of Texas, and the University of South Carolina.  Other participants include units from Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, and the Army, Naval, and Air Force ROTC detachments at the U of M.

The day’s events will begin with the Endurance Challenge at 8 a.m. near Gate 11 at Shelby Farms.  It will be run in waves of three or four teams; 13 teams will compete.  That event should be completed by 11 a.m.

Other events will take place on the U of M campus, some on Memorial Field (the track area adjacent to the Roane Field House) and others on the ellipse just east of the McWherter Library.  They will start about 10 a.m. and run until 3 p.m.

An awards ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. in the University Center Theatre.

Drill events will include unit uniform inspection, basic drill and exhibition drill for platoon and squad, one-man and two-man exhibition drill, and color guard.  Judging criteria include a unit’s overall precision and execution of drill movements, discipline, confidence, attention to detail, command presence, and knowledge of Naval details.
