Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Midshipmen and their active duty Naval Science
instructors from around the nation will meet on campus Saturday, April 2, for the
Fourth Annual Reserve Officers Training Corps Drill Meet, sponsored by the University
of Memphis Naval ROTC.
Students and instructors from 15 units across the country will participate. Among
the schools represented will be Ohio State, Illinois State, Savannah State, Purdue,
and Marion Military Institute. Also sending units are the University of California
at Berkeley, the University of Illinois, the University of Maryland, the University
of Texas, and the University of South Carolina. Other participants include units
from Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, and the Army, Naval, and Air Force ROTC detachments at
the U of M.
The day’s events will begin with the Endurance Challenge at 8 a.m. near Gate 11 at
Shelby Farms. It will be run in waves of three or four teams; 13 teams will compete.
That event should be completed by 11 a.m.
Other events will take place on the U of M campus, some on Memorial Field (the track
area adjacent to the Roane Field House) and others on the ellipse just east of the
McWherter Library. They will start about 10 a.m. and run until 3 p.m.
An awards ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. in the University Center Theatre.
Drill events will include unit uniform inspection, basic drill and exhibition drill
for platoon and squad, one-man and two-man exhibition drill, and color guard. Judging
criteria include a unit’s overall precision and execution of drill movements, discipline,
confidence, attention to detail, command presence, and knowledge of Naval details.
