Jazz Week kicks off Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at the University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt
School of Music. Headliner for this year's event is saxophonist Rahsaan Barber and
his group El Movimiento, who will perform with the Southern Comfort Jazz Orchestra
on Saturday, March 5 in the U of M's Harris Concert Hall.
Barber's resume as a performer includes notable appearances with the late Al Grey,
Bobby Sanabria, Winard Harper and Manny Oquendo Y Libre. He was selected as one of
only four Americans to perform at the 2003 World Saxophone Competition held at the
Montreux Jazz Festival. For Jazz Week, Barber will also perform with the core of El
Movimiento, which includes Dominican percussionist Giovanni Rodriguez and Puerto Rican
trumpeter Imer Santiago.
All performances are held at 7:30 p.m. in Harris Concert Hall. Admission for the concerts
March 1-4 is free. General admission for performance on the March 5 is $10; $7 for
