WUMR Will Open “Jazz in June” Radiothon with Taylor Daniel Concert June 23

For release: June 14, 2013
For press information, contact Kimberly Rogers, 901-678-4164

WUMR U92FM will host its “Jazz in June” summer radiothon June 23-30 to raise support for the Mid-South’s only exclusively jazz radio station.

The fundraiser will begin with a concert by Taylor Daniel on Sunday, June 23, from 6-8 p.m. at the Germantown Performing Arts Center. Doors open at 5:30. Daniel is a rising Memphis jazz vocalist. Tickets are $29 in advance and $34 at the door. To order, go online to gpacweb.com, call 901-751-7500 or visit GPAC at 1801 Exeter Rd. in Germantown.

To pledge, go online to memphis.edu/wumr or call 901-678-4000 or 877-955-5299. Online pledges can be taken at any time during the year, not just during the radiothon. All donations to the station support general operations so WUMR can continue to provide specialized programming to its listening audience.

Known as “The Jazz Lover,” WUMR is a 25,000-watt station serving listeners within a 60-mile radius of Memphis that streams online as well, providing music to jazz lovers around the world. WUMR’s playlist blends contemporary and traditional jazz with a touch of fusion, Latin and New Age music. Staffed almost exclusively by students and volunteers, it serves the area with educational, sports and community-service programming.

WUMR functions as a learning laboratory for U of M students, providing them experience in announcing, news reporting and writing, talk show hosting, and sportscasting. In addition to on-air positions, students serve in management roles in various departments, including music, production, traffic, news and sports.
