January 30, 2014 - Ring Companies has completed a $1 million donation to create the
Ring Companies Chair in the Herff College of Engineering at the University of Memphis.
The Chair will be awarded to a distinguished scholar and teacher in mechanical, electrical
or computer engineering who exhibits excellence in engineering education and research.
"Faculty members who are exceptional in both instruction and research are the greatest
resources we can offer our students," said Dr. Richard Sweigard, dean of the Herff
College. "The creation of the Ring Companies Chair allows us to recruit and retain
top quality faculty in mechanical, electrical or computer engineering. We are extremely
grateful to the Ring Companies for their generous support and commitment to the Herff
College of Engineering."
The Ring Companies' gift was officially acknowledged during a halftime presentation
by Provost David Rudd at the Tiger basketball game on Jan. 26.
"We at Ring Companies believe the University of Memphis is an incredible asset to
the city of Memphis and surrounding communities," said Carl Ring, chair of Ring Companies.
"We know this because we have worked closely with the Herff College of Engineering
for many years and have benefited greatly from our association with its faculty, staff
and students. We would now like to return the favor by funding this Chair, and by
saying thank you to the folks who impact our city and community more than we or they
