Flag-raising Jan. 12 Will Formally Mark the Beginning of the U of M’s Lambuth Campus

For release: January 6, 2012
For press information, contact Curt Guenther, 901-678-2843

An official flag-raising ceremony has been scheduled at the Lambuth Campus of the University of Memphis at noon January 12.  The event will formalize last month’s official recording of the deed, which transferred the property from the Lambuth University Board of Directors to the State of Tennessee, for the benefit of the University of Memphis.

Taking part in the ceremony will be Gov. Bill Haslam, Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris, Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist, Tennessee Board of Regents Chancellor John Morgan, and U of M President Shirley Raines.

The City of Jackson, Madison County Government, West Tennessee Healthcare, and the Jackson Energy Authority each contributed $2 million to purchase the campus and then turn it over to the State of Tennessee, for use by the University of Memphis. With the assistance of Governor Bill Haslam, the state legislature agreed to allocate state funding for operating costs once the transfer of property is complete.

The University of Memphis Lambuth Campus opened for classes this fall with more than 300 students. Spring semester classes at the Lambuth Campus begin Jan 12.
