An official flag-raising ceremony has been scheduled at the Lambuth Campus of the
University of Memphis at noon January 12. The event will formalize last month’s official
recording of the deed, which transferred the property from the Lambuth University
Board of Directors to the State of Tennessee, for the benefit of the University of
Taking part in the ceremony will be Gov. Bill Haslam, Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris,
Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist, Tennessee Board of Regents Chancellor John Morgan, and U
of M President Shirley Raines.
The City of Jackson, Madison County Government, West Tennessee Healthcare, and the
Jackson Energy Authority each contributed $2 million to purchase the campus and then
turn it over to the State of Tennessee, for use by the University of Memphis. With
the assistance of Governor Bill Haslam, the state legislature agreed to allocate state
funding for operating costs once the transfer of property is complete.
The University of Memphis Lambuth Campus opened for classes this fall with more than
300 students. Spring semester classes at the Lambuth Campus begin Jan 12.
