Background

The McWherter Library Learning Commons was established in late 2006 as a cooperative effort of the University Libraries and the Information Technology Division. It was funded primarily through student technology fees. The McWherter Library Commons is a unique learning environment that brings together library resources, information professionals, and computer technology. The Learning Commons is distributed throughout McWherter Library and is designed to provide comprehensive support for students as they undertake research, complete assignments, prepare papers or presentations, or study. In addition to computers, printers, and scanners, there are personnel who can assist with every aspect of a student's work. There are Librarians and library staff who will assist with identifying and evaluating appropriate information resources; Technical Assistants who can answer computer-related questions; and Learning Commons Assistants who will help with locating items on the shelves. Thus students can come to one place for all their information needs.
