The newspaper/magazine emphasis prepares students to become competent, ethical journalists
who will work as newspaper reporters, copy editors, webmasters and magazine writers
or designers.
Students have the opportunity to work at The Daily Helmsman, the independent campus
newspaper, and build portfolios of published stories, photos, and design elements
that lead to valuable internships.
Some of the numerous places our students have interned include the Scripps Howard
News Service in Washington, D. C., The Birmingham News, The San Antonio Express News,
The Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader, The Modesto (Calif.) Bee, The (Boise, Idaho) Statesman,
The (Raleigh) News & Observer, The Tacoma (Wash.) News Tribune., The Reader’s Digest
and Rolling Stone Magazine in New York and Memphis Magazine. They also intern frequently
at The Commercial Appeal and The Memphis Business Journal.
Our U of M chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Association
of Black Journalists also provide valuable contacts with media professionals, and
our alumni mentor student journalists.
